McAllen continues to prove itself as a premier destination for sports tourism in Texas.
The recently opened McAllen Youth Baseball Complex hosted C&C Sports Winter Nationals Tournament March 8-9, after being rescheduled due to inclement weather in January. The 40-team tournament saw 10 visiting teams coming from Laredo and Corpus Christi.
The next tournament with teams traveling from outside the Rio Grande Valley will be held on May 4-5, 2019. The USSSA-sanctioned baseball tournament is expected to have 40 teams participating in the Cinco de Mayo Tournament.
Cinco de Mayo weekend is turning out to be a sports-driven weekend, with the local Tigres Soccer Club set to host its International Soccer Tournament at the McAllen Sports Park. The event will have an estimated 70 teams vying for the championship, with 30 teams coming from Mexico.
In a partnership with McAllen Independent School District, the UIL 5A Region IV Boys & Girls Golf Championships will be held in McAllen April 12-13, 2019. The state-qualifying tournament will take place at the Palm View and McAllen Country Club Golf Courses.
Also in April, Atlas Soccer will host its Spring Tournament April 20-21, 2019. The annual tournament is expected to draw 60 teams with 20 visiting teams from Mexico. In other sports news, the Youth Fast Pitch Softball Park is expected to be ready for play August 2019, and the CVB team is actively seeking partnerships with local tournament directors and the McAllen Boys & Girls Club to make the tournament-quality park a destination for visiting teams.
